This is a widget which I first created for a commercial theme, but have since decided to release as a free and open-source project. https://github.com/cubewebsites/Cube-Category-Featured-Products It allows you to display featured products, or all catalog products and group them by category, or display as a mixed block. There's a whole range of customisation options, and the template follows that of the other catalog widgets so adding/removing visual elements from the template is a breeze
